![]() If you plan to use your hard drive for any purposes other than SJMC coursework (e.g., personal storage, with a Windows computer, etc.), follow these steps to create a partition. If prompted to use your newly-formatted drive with Time Machine, click the “ Don’t Use” button. ![]() ![]() When the Mac has finished formatting the drive, click the “ Done” button.Click the Erase button to start formatting the drive.For “ Scheme:” select “ GUID Partition.”.In the “ Format:” pop-up menu, select “ OS Extended (Journaled)” if it is not already chosen.In the “ Name:” field, enter a name for your drive.Select your external drive in the left sidebar.Click View from the menu bar and select Show All Devices.You can copy these back on your drive after you finish formatting the drive. You can create a folder on the Desktop and copy your files there. NOTE: If you have files on your drive that you want to keep, you need to save them first elsewhere so that they are not erased when you format your drive. (OR, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility). Plug in your external hard drive and wait for it to load. Search for “disk utility” in Spotlight.
